A short walk on a cold day doesn't have to mean a bored dog. Mental stimulation can be just as tiring as physical exercise, and there are plenty of ways to engage your dog's brain without leaving the house.
Scatter feeding is one of the simplest enrichment activities. Instead of serving your dog's meal in a bowl, scatter the kibble across a sniff mat, a patch of grass (if you have indoor access to one), or even across a clean floor. Your dog will spend significantly longer eating, and the sniffing involved is genuinely tiring.
Puzzle feeders and food-dispensing toys are another easy option. There's a wide range available, from simple rubber toys that can be stuffed with wet food or peanut butter to more complex sliding-panel puzzles. Start with an easier level and work up — a puzzle that's too difficult can be frustrating rather than enriching.
Training sessions are underrated as enrichment. Even five to ten minutes of working on known commands or learning something new is mentally demanding for most dogs. Keep sessions short and positive, end on a success, and use high-value treats for new skills.
Scent games are particularly effective for dogs with a strong nose. Hide a treat or a favorite toy somewhere in the house and encourage your dog to find it. Start with easy hides and gradually make them more challenging. Many dogs find this kind of searching deeply satisfying.
Don't underestimate the value of calm, unstructured time. Not every indoor hour needs to be an activity. Providing a comfortable, warm spot — a cozy bed, a soft blanket, a quiet corner — and letting your dog rest and observe is a legitimate part of a balanced day.
