Some dogs take to wearing clothes immediately. Others freeze, shake, or do their best impression of a statue the moment a jacket appears. If your dog falls into the second category, a gradual introduction using positive reinforcement is the most reliable approach.
Start by simply letting your dog sniff and investigate the jacket while it's on the floor. Don't try to put it on yet — just let them get used to its presence. Pair this with treats and calm praise. The goal is for the jacket to become a neutral or positive object before it ever touches your dog.
Next, drape the jacket loosely over your dog's back without fastening it. Give treats immediately and remove the jacket after a few seconds. Repeat this several times over a few sessions, gradually increasing the duration. Keep the energy calm and positive throughout.
Once your dog is comfortable with the jacket resting on their back, begin fastening one closure at a time. Start with whichever closure is least restrictive — often a belly strap rather than a neck closure. Fasten it, give treats, and remove the jacket. Gradually work up to having all closures fastened.
The first time your dog wears the jacket fully fastened, keep the session very short — a minute or two indoors. Distract them with treats or a brief training session. Many dogs forget they're wearing the jacket once they're engaged in something else.
If your dog shows persistent distress — panting, trembling, refusing to move, or trying to remove the jacket — take a step back in the process and move more slowly. Some dogs need more time than others, and that's completely fine. The goal is a dog who is comfortable, not a dog who tolerates discomfort.
