How to Wash a Dog Jacket Without Ruining It

By February, your dog’s jacket has probably seen a lot of slush, salt and mud. It may also smell like wet dog. Regular cleaning keeps a jacket comfortable against your dog’s coat and helps it keep doing its job. Washing it the wrong way, though, can damage water-resistant finishes, insulation and fasteners. Here is a general approach to cleaning dog outerwear safely.

Start with the care label

Always check the maker’s care instructions first. Different materials need different treatment. Some jackets are machine washable, some are hand wash only, and some insulated or coated jackets need special care. The label will tell you water temperature, whether to use a dryer and whether to avoid certain products. When in doubt, choose the gentler option.

Prepare the jacket

  • Shake out loose dirt, snow residue and fur
  • Brush off dried mud with a soft brush
  • Close hook-and-loop fasteners so they do not snag other fabric or collect lint
  • Close zippers and buckles
  • Remove any detachable pieces, such as lights or tags, if possible
  • Pre-treat salt stains by gently wiping with a damp cloth

Salt can leave white marks and stiffen fabric over time, so rinsing or wiping it away regularly helps.

Washing

For machine washing, use a gentle cycle and cool or lukewarm water unless the label says otherwise. A mild detergent is usually a better choice than a heavy-duty one. Many owners choose fragrance-free products, since dogs have sensitive noses and skin. Avoid fabric softener on water-resistant jackets, as it can affect the finish. Washing the jacket inside a mesh laundry bag can protect straps and fasteners. For hand washing, soak the jacket in a basin of cool water with a small amount of mild detergent, gently work the fabric, then rinse thoroughly until no soap remains. Leftover detergent can irritate your dog’s skin.

Drying

Drying is where many jackets get damaged. High heat can shrink fabric, warp fasteners and damage coatings. Unless the label says tumble drying on low is fine, air dry the jacket. Lay it flat or hang it in a warm, well-ventilated spot away from direct heat sources like radiators and fireplaces. Make sure it is completely dry, including insulated layers and seams, before your dog wears it again. A damp jacket against your dog’s coat can cause discomfort and, on curly coats, contribute to mats.

Between washes and over the season

You do not need to wash a jacket after every walk. Wipe off salt and mud with a damp cloth, then hang the jacket to dry. If it gets soaked, dry it fully before the next use. Over time, water-resistant finishes can wear down; some products can refresh them, but follow the jacket maker’s guidance. While cleaning, inspect seams, fasteners and reflective trim, and look inside for rough spots that might rub. If your dog develops skin irritation where the jacket sits, stop using it and talk to your veterinarian. A clean, well-cared-for jacket will be ready for the rest of winter and the next one.
